Dandruff is a kind of Seborrheic dermatitis and it is believed that dandruff is caused by a fungus that normally lives on the human skin and feeds on skin oils. During dandruff this fungus known as malassezia multiplies manifold and creates problems in the scalp. Why a fungus, which otherwise lies dormant, suddenly flares up and multiplies is not precisely known.

The Dandruff problem is caused because of a very small and tiny little fungus.

This microscopic fungus organism is known as pityrosporum-ovle... I wish I knew how to pronounce that (LOL). This fungus is in really low quantities on normal healthy scalps. Whenever a person has Dandruff irritation there is a very large amount of pityrosporum-ovle in the scalp area. The organism feeds on the oily substance that is secreted by your hair follicles. This causes an botheration in the infected scalp area which in turn leads to a quicker cell turnover. This causes itching dandruff.

In rare cases when your dandruff condition cannot be helped by special shampoos, you may want to consult with a dermatologist. Dermatologists are experts in treating all skin conditions including dandruff, and will be able to prescribe you a shampoo that will attack your dandruff problem more aggressively than over-the-counter products. If you're serious about wanting to know how to get rid of dandruff, you must accept that sometimes consulting with a physician is a necessary step.

There are many natural treatments to help alleviate dandruff. It would be a good idea to further explore natural dandruff remedies before you begin using them. You should also make an appointment with your dermatologist. In addition, ensure that you don't have any allergic reactions to any of the natural ingredients.One of the common natural remedies that I've come across is Tea Tree oil. Tea tree oil is already in many dandruff shampoos.
Add six spoonfuls water, two spoonfuls pure vinegar and apply it on the scalp with cotton wool before going to bed. Tie a towel around your head to protect the pillow. Wash your hair next morning. After shampooing, rinse again with vinegar water. Continue this once a week for at least three months.

Many shampoos are available the control the pH of the scalp. Nizoral is a new shampoo that works to directly inhibit the growth of the fungus that causes dandruff. It is clinically the only ‘cure’ for dandruff.

Use a medicated shampoo. The medicated shampoo will reduce the speed of the growth of the cells on the scalp, thus lessening the cell replacement and decreasing the amount of dandruff. The shampoo should also have an antiseptic that will help prevent infection of your scalp so as to reduce itchiness.

Stop using gels, hairsprays and hair-coloring products. If you must use them, do not use them excessively and learn the proper use of such products.

Neem oil also offers relief for itchiness and redness of scalp associated with dandruff and psoriasis conditions. You must restrict yourself from changing shampoos everyday and stick to one that suits your constitution and scalp condition.

Keeping the scalp clean by regular cleansing is itself enough to prevent hair fall and other hair related problems.
